The Opportunity

Aim High is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as its Director of Partnerships. Reporting to VP of Philanthropy and Marketing and in partnership with the CEO, this dynamic role will support the organization’s long-term vision of increasing the number of students who have access to the Aim High program by forming strong earned-revenue partnerships with schools, districts, and community-based organizations. This includes creating and driving a strategic approach to growing our earned revenue strategy in a sustainable way. This role is highly collaborative and requires strategic thinking that can set up the organization for ambitious and sustainable growth. This position works closely with its CEO, Board of Trustees, and members of the Aim High staff.

Aim High is in the midst of creating the next strategic plan, and this position will take the lead in building an earned revenue strategy that increases revenue growth on an annual basis. Drive partnerships strategy:

  • Working closely with the CEO, VP of Philanthropy and Marketing, VP of Program Design and Impact, and VP of Program Operations to build and execute the organization’s earned revenue strategy, including owning the development of a pipeline of prospects capable of entering a fee-for-service relationship with Aim High. Lead the execution of the annual business development strategy and forecast to meet revenue growth targets.
  • Lead the development and management of the organization’s selection criteria and MOU execution process for new sites and regional expansions. Serve as the organization’s primary earned revenue sales lead, including the creation of sales proposals and presentations to articulate partnership opportunities. Work closely with regional program teams and senior management to finalize partnerships.
  • Build and close a sales pipeline that enables the organization to meet its goals for growth and scale
  • Collaborate with Finance to understand cost of services to determine pricing tactics and lead revenue conversations that support financially-sustainable, long-term growth plans
  • Identify data, metrics, and methodology to estimate KPIs, and track, measure, and report new monthly/quarterly data cross partnerships for each relationship leader

Provide organizational leadership:

  • Partner with the CEO and VPPM in shaping organizational and revenue generation strategies that drive the growth of the organization.
  • Act as a strategic advisor on the organization’s strategy, vision, and overall performance. Provide thought partnership on the organization’s strategic planning.
  • Partner with the CEO, Board, and Senior Management Team to create a long-term sustainability plan for the organization.
  • Work closely with members of the program team to build and maintain processes for greenlighting new site expansion
  • Effectively communicate and present critical matters to the senior management team and the Board of Trustees.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the organization, including the CEO and Board. Serve as a trusted advisor.
  • Assist in building a strong and productive sense of community and team. Be a culture carrier committed to Aim High’s ADEI (Anti-Racist, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) values.

Job Details

  • Reports To: VP of Philanthropy and Marketing
  • Location: Bay Area, CA
  • Pay range is $135,000 – $150,000 DOE
  • Classification: Full-time (40 hours per week); exempt from overtime

Announcing Raising A Reader’s New Development Director

Pillar Search & HR Consulting is excited to announce that Frances Lee will be joining the National Office of Raising A Reader as Development Director.  In this capacity, Frances will be responsible for developing and leading Raising A Reader’s annual contributed revenue plan. Reporting to the President and CEO, she will lead a three-year growth fund campaign to support the organization’s new strategic plan and build relationships with institutional and major donors.

Frances joins Raising A Reader from Girls on the Run of the Bay Area, where she served as Development & Communications Manager.  In that role, Frances was responsible for events, marketing and fundraising campaigns to ensure the continued growth of the organization and creating meaningful partnerships with Bay Area companies and community members to further the mission of empowering healthy, confident girls. Before joining Girls on the Run, Frances served in a variety of roles including as a consultant with the San Francisco Bach Choir, Senior Manager, Field Development with Autism Speaks, and Community Engagement Representative with Be The Match, which is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program. In addition, Frances is currently on the Board of Directors at Little Opera, where she serves as Development Chair, and has done event and fundraising consulting with San Francisco Marathon, A Runner’s Mind Productions, and OneCause.

ABOUT RAISING A READER

Raising A Reader (RAR) is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to foster early literacy skills, parent-child bonding, and healthy brain development by helping the families of children (ages 0-8) build the home literacy routines essential for school success. Parents learn researched-based book sharing practices, and each week children bring home a bright red bag filled with high-quality, multicultural books. Families are also connected to their local libraries to sustain book borrowing and sharing practices.

RAR operates in over 2,500 locations nationally, has reached over 1.2 million children, and has over 15 million books in rotation. 2019 marks Raising A Reader’s 20th anniversary. Since 1999, RAR’s model has been validated by more than 30 independent evaluations. The White House’s Office of Hispanic Education, and The White House’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative have identified the model as a national best practice. The US Department of Education awarded RAR a prestigious Innovative Approach to Literacy Award and in 2014 identified RAR as a national model for its alignment with the recently adopted Dual Capacity Family Engagement Framework. JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Development Director is responsible for developing and leading Raising A Reader’s (“RAR”) annual contributed revenue plan. The Director will contribute to strategy development, build relationships with institutional (corporations, private foundations, and government) funders and major donors, and solicit five figure+ gifts in partnership with the President and CEO and Board of Directors. The Director will have a significant leadership role in RAR’s ability to raise revenue to support the organization’s $4MM operating budget:

  • Raise contributed revenue to support annual operations, historically ~$1.5M+;
  • Lead a three-year growth fund campaign to support RAR’s new strategic plan, estimated at $3MM; and
  • Indirectly support $2.5MM in earned revenue annually.

The Development Director will provide direction to a grant writer, and indirect supervision to associate team members. This position will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA or may be remote from Los Angeles, CA.

Responsibilities

Fundraising:

  • Work strategically and effectively with the CEO to ensure that annual philanthropic revenue goals are achieved.
  • Oversee the cultivation, stewardship and development of Raising A Reader’s pipeline of national institutional, corporate, and major donor funding. Serve as leader on strategy development, prospect research, and moves management.
  • With the support of the CEO and Board of Directors, manage current and prospective donor relationships, engaging donors in person, by email, and by phone to secure gifts.
  • Direct the fundraising campaign efforts to ensure the success of Raising A Reader’s 2020-2023 strategic plan.
  • Create a strategy and toolkit to build the fundraising capacity of Raising A Reader’s affiliate network of (currently) 300 community-based organizations across 40 states. Work across Raising A Reader divisions to ensure fundraising training, communications, and best practices are central to our value-add to the network.
  • Establish and ensure development operations standards including but not limited to policies, processes, and measuring accountability.
  • With the support of a grant writer, produce compelling written materials including grants, reports, and collateral.
  • Provide direct and indirect guidance, supervision, and coaching to grant writer and operations associate.
  • Lead cross-departmental initiatives and special projects assigned by leadership or requested by prospects or clients.

Communications:

  • Assist as directed in supporting RAR’s national communications efforts with the team and key stakeholders.

Grants, Gifts and Compliance:

  • Oversee the execution of grant-related activities, communication with funders and completion of final activity reports. Demonstrate an extremely high level of cross-departmental collaboration in the completion of these activities.
  • Work closely with the finance team to manage gift records, contributions, and grants.

Please note:  Up to 25% travel may be required.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in fundraising with progressive responsibility. Experience securing gifts that are six figure and above.
  • Bachelor’s degree.  Master’s degree in a field relevant to community work (Public Policy or Administration, Education, Public Health, or a related discipline) or comparable community experience preferred.
  • Experience with national nonprofit organizations with affiliates (or equivalent organizational structures) and comfortable working in a matrixed environment with multiple locations
  • Passion for RAR’s mission.
  • Proven ability to build internal relationships across and within an organization.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and providing prompt, professional responses to donor inquiries.
  • Strong technology/software skills, experience with Salesforce and WordPress strongly preferred. Experience with Wealth Engine, iwave, and/or other fundraising software a plus.
  • A proven ability to work independently when necessary, along with the ability to partner effectively with a variety of important audiences, including volunteers, key staff, major donors, and prospects.
  • Strong contributor as a member of a team and willing to participate in activities that will contribute to the overall success of RAR.
  • Extremely strong and demonstrated verbal and written communications skills; can write clearly and persuasively.
  • Perseveres, has high energy level, patience, imagination, humor and creativity.

POSITION OVERVIEW:  

Year Up seeks an experienced and dynamic Sales Director, Western Region to lead its Corporate Engagement and Internships initiatives for several national accounts. Reporting to the National Director of Corporate Engagement, this individual will lead the effort to expand and broaden our relationships and internship placements in select accounts on a national basis. The Sales Director, Western Region will work with major Fortune 500 corporations in need of entry-level talent to provide trained, high-potential urban young adults with high-quality internships, and will ensure a program of support and professional development for these young adults on their internships. The ideal candidate should desire to leverage his or her demonstrated experience in sales, strategy, and for-profit management practices within our mission-driven social enterprise.

 

To be successful in this role, you will develop and implement a strategic internship sales plan to achieve revenue targets, manage client accounts and relationships, and design robust engagement strategies. You should have the ability to adjust strategies and priorities in response to organizational growth and needs, as well as the demands of the evolving market. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

 

Leadership and Direction Setting

  • Provide strategic direction in response to market and scaling needs

  • Lead internship sales forecasting activities for existing and prospective accounts
  • Review and deliver effective proposals that feature Year Up’s innovative model and past successes for solving corporate entry-level talent needs
  • Regularly prepare reports showing internship volume, potential internship sales, and areas of proposed expansion
  • Utilize Salesforce.com to maintain accurate records of all sales and prospecting activities including sales calls, presentations, closed sales, and follow-up activities

 

Internship Program Management

  • Sustain a strong internship program that meets the business needs of corporate partners and affords Year Up interns the opportunity to apply their learning in a supportive, professional environment
  • Promote internship retention strategies that result in increased completion and satisfaction levels for both partners and young adults
  • Drive cross-functionality with dexterity and flexibility in support of the internship program
  • Ensure knowledge transfer and management over internship program for data capture and quality assurance, including internship readiness assessments, matching processes, on-boarding, announcements, etc.
  • Set benchmarks for increased internship to hire rates across network of corporate partners

 

Relationship Management

  • Design and implement effective strategies for driving engagement with your assigned accounts
  • Set and meet targets for increasing corporate partner status from partner to advocate and advocate to champion  Lead the team to effectively manage all aspects of corporate relationships, interfacing with partners, students, and staff members as needed
  • Establish and maintain relationships with industry influencers and key strategic partners
  • Engage with C-level executives and decision makers in a variety of formal and informal settings
  • Serve as a lead on high-level and/or critically sensitive corporate engagement situations that arise

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 7+ years professional experience in strategic account management and/or sales to enterprise level accounts (e.g. sales, client service, development)
  • Consultative sales approach and background in technology or technology enabled solutions preferred 
  • Demonstrated ability to generate leads, close business, and manage annual sales targets of $5M+
  • Proven ability to influence, develop, manage, support and empower employees to achieve objectives within a team
  • Documented strengths in meaningful relationship building, management and growth to scale
  • Demonstrated ability to set direction and manage complex teams, projects, and processes
