POSITION SUMMARY:
The Gloucester Adventure, Inc. (“Schooner Adventure” or “Adventure”) is a 501(c)(3) maritime historic preservation and educational organization. We are the stewards of the 1926 dory-fishing Schooner Adventure, a National Historic Landmark. Our mission focuses on preserving the vessel and using her for educational and community experiences on the water and dockside. In this small and growing organization, the Director of Development is responsible for planning and directing all of Schooner Adventure’s fundraising endeavors including the annual fund, membership program, major gifts, special events, planned giving, and implementing the donor management software to support the function. Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director, the Director of Development will spearhead development efforts as Schooner Adventure continues to transition and grow.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors on establishing development goals and budgets;
  • Lead and manage the organization’s efforts to meet such goals, financially and otherwise;
  • Participate in monthly evening Board meetings and related Board Committee meetings, including presenting reports;
  • Direct the annual fund and membership program, including mailings and annual fundraising drives;
  • Coordinate special events and sails, including a major annual spring fundraising Gala and donor receptions throughout the year;
  • Manage fundraising tracking systems and database (Donor Perfect), and oversee data entry and gift processing;
  • Initiate a well-considered plan for donor visits and fundraising calls, assign these to key staff and board members, and follow up where necessary;
  • Meet prospective donors and supporters on a continuous basis and establish effective communications with such supporters;
  • Motivate staff, board members and volunteers to promote the mission and to engage in development activities;
  • Grow our Captain’s Circle, a dedicated group of donors with larger annual donations, including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors;
  • Work with other members of Adventure’s board and staff, researching and identifying grants, and following up on applications and proposals, including writing, and reporting requirements;
  • Grow our corporate sponsor program and maintain strong relationships with our existing sponsors;
  • Lead any new development efforts that may be initiated, such as capital campaigns and planned giving;
  • Work closely with the bookkeeper to ensure data accuracy and reconciliations between Donor Perfect and QuickBooks;
  • Serve as a key part of Adventure’s marketing team, in collaboration with other staff and board members; responsibilities may include: creating and sending emails via Constant Contact, working with designers to create and place advertisements, and posting on social media;
  • Participate in and speak at community events to share information about Schooner Adventure with the community;
  • Perform other related duties as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in professional fundraising;
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • The ability to project enthusiasm and dedication to the mission of Schooner Adventure, even in challenging situations;
  • Demonstrated experience in donor cultivation and stewardship, and in building partnerships;
  • Advanced competency in spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets); fluency with Donor Perfect (or comparable CRM software); experience with social media, Constant Contact;
  • The ability to learn and gain comfort with a variety of online platforms for the purpose of promoting Adventure and managing donor activities.
SALARY/BENEFITS:
Salary ranges from $57k – $73k based on skills and experience. Benefits include 75% of health care costs, three weeks paid vacation, one week personal leave, and a flexible work schedule. We also support professional development opportunities to help you grow in your skills. Staff are encouraged to bring guests to sail on Adventure with them.

ABOUT THE ROLE  

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Development Manager plays a key role in sustaining initiatives, such as the B.A.A.’s third-party fundraising efforts via special events, corporate and foundation support, and the annual development fund. Additionally, the Development Manager manages the organization’s strategic investments in the local community via the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program and the B.A.A. Gives Back Grant Program, by serving as the primary facilitator for applications, programming, and communication. Through their work, the Development Manager helps to advance the mission of the B.A.A. by supporting organizations that focus on building healthy communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

FUNDRAISING

  • Partner with the Director of Development to develop and implement comprehensive, cost-effective programs that encompass third-party giving, special events, corporate and foundation support, and an annual development fund.
  • Manages the application process for the B.A.A. Gives Back Marathon Team.
  • Lead planning process for fundraising events in coordination with Director of Development, including but not limited to, the B.A.A. Gives Back Gala.
  • Manage the organization’s fundraising database, gift recording, gift acknowledgment, data quality, reporting, and gift trends and insights.
  • Partner with the Director of Development in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors/potential donors.

STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS

  • Manage the annual application process for the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program.
  • Support charity partners in program development designed to help them achieve their fundraising goals.
  • Partner with the Director of Development to continue developing the B.A.A. Gives Back Grant Program to provide monetary and in-kind support to local organizations that align with the B.A.A.’s mission.
  • Manage the B.A.A. Gives Back Grant Program’s application process.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively represent the B.A.A. to the community and develop and maintain relationships with staff, volunteers, community leaders, and major donors.
  • Oversee email correspondence to partners, inclusive of reminders, requests, and invitations.
  • Lead full-cycle projects from conception to completion and able to work with a variety of team members to accomplish goals.
  • Manage policing and enforcement of B.A.A. intellectual property standards (such as trademark and logo) in all materials created by the Official Charity Program and Grant Program, whether printed, electronic, social media, clothing, etc.
  • Oversee the organization’s charity and grant program website pages.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORK EXPECTATIONS AT THE B.A.A.

We are a hands-on team and seek employees who are passionate about our work and service to our community. The Development Manager role is a 40 hours/week, exempt position. The role will require working some weekends and evenings. There will be longer work hours surrounding events. Limited local travel required.

ABOUT THE MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER OPPORTUNITY:

The Major Gifts Officer will play a critical role in increasing major donor support, and acts as an ambassador for JVS Boston across the community.  Responsibilities include: new donor identification, cultivation and stewardship of existing donors to increase overall retention and giving, and relationship management between donors and others on the board and staff who work with them. The Major Gifts Officer will also be responsible for formalizing and growing the organization’s planned giving program.

The Major Gifts Officer reports to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and will work closely and collaboratively with the CEO, Mid-Level Gifts Officer, board members, and other external stakeholders.

Essential Functions

Donor Management

  • Maintain a personal portfolio of 50+ major donors and prospects (defined as those giving a gift of $10,000+), as well as those donors and prospects that have the capacity to give at this level or higher.
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for this portfolio of prospects, developing and implementing a written donor strategy and relationship record (using Salesforce) of all interactions.
  • Communicate with portfolio through face-to-face cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship meetings, as well as verbal and written strategies; ensure that each major donor and prospect has a clear strategy and timeline for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Develop solicitation strategies for donors / prospects in support of the organization’s annual fund, planned giving, and growth campaigns; ensure strategies are compatible and maximize opportunities with other existing campaigns.
  • Support the fundraising efforts of the CDO and CEO in securing new and renewed gifts.
  • With the CDO, create and manage individual giving revenue targets across streams; track and report on progress to goal to CDO, CEO, and CFO including contracts, gifts, and pledges.
  • Work with the Mid-Level Gifts Officers to screen and prepare profiles of current and prospective donors; establish and refine benchmarks for department research processes as needed.

Campaign Strategy

  • Work with the CDO to manage revenue projection and expense budget, as well as pledges and pledge fulfillments.
  • Work with CDO to plan and execute major gifts campaigns.

Events

  • Work with the Communications Manager and Mid-Level Gifts Officer to strategize and help execute cultivation events for major donors and prospects.
  • Be a visible presence at development department special events, such as major donor cultivation events and fundraisers.

Volunteer Liaison

  • Work collaboratively with the Volunteer Manager to ensure that volunteer opportunities meet the needs and expectations of current and prospective donors, while serving the immediate needs of JVS.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for corporate groups interested in connecting with JVS through volunteering.
  • Create feedback and improvement loop with all volunteer groups with a goal of ensuring positive experience, continued engagement, and moves management of volunteers toward making a financial commitment to JVS where and when possible.

Planned Giving

  • Working with the Chief Development Officer, develop a strategy for outreach to and stewardship of planned giving prospects and donors.
  • Develop all print and web-based supporting materials for planned giving program.

Additional Functions

  • Supervise the Mid-Level Gifts Officer
  • Manage Major Gifts Task Force in collaboration with the CDO
  • Manage Resource Development Committee with the Mid-Level Gifts Officer
  • Provide analysis and recommendations based on reporting.
  • Provide detailed prospect reports for solicitors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience plus a minimum of 5-10 years (direct or equivalent) experience managing high level donor relationships with demonstrated success in closing gifts of $10,000 and above.
  • Ability to conceive, plan, and execute a major gifts program, including annual giving, special events, and special projects/campaigns.
  • Excellent grasp of Salesforce database software.
  • Willingness to be hands-on in a role that is demanding and requires a high level of energy and professionalism.
  • High level proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Teams, Word, and Excel, and a working knowledge of search functions for donor research purposes.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to communicate professionally with a culturally diverse group of volunteers, co-workers, and donors.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills and ability to prioritize workload in a timely manner to complete assignments with many deadlines and competing requirements.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
