As Program Director, Naomi will be responsible for oversight of program operations, providing leadership to and management of the teams in both centers, and agency-wide initiatives and projects, including quality assurance and process improvement.

Naomi brings extensive experience in the adult day health field. Most recently, she was the Center Manager at Element Care/PACE. Prior, she was a Senior Master of Social Work Field Specialist and Adjunct Faculty member at Salem State University’s School of Social Work.

Naomi has also served as Chair of the Board of Selectmen for the town of Swampscott, MA.

Naomi received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her master’s in social work with a focus on gerontology from University of California at Berkeley.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the leadership of the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President of Academic Services is charged with developing and leading agency Academic services based on identified needs of clients, employers, funders, and other stakeholders.

The Vice President of Academic Services is responsible for the following key initiatives:

  • Adult Diploma Pathway, which helps participants earn a free high school diploma from Boston Central Adult High School in 18 months to three years
  • Bridges to College and Career, a program that builds participants’ academic skills, apply for college, and kickstart their career after graduation

In collaboration with agency senior leadership, the Vice President sets the vision, goals, and performance expectations of Academic Services programs, teams, and staff. The Vice President is responsible for the fiscal health of Academic Services programs, program budgets, and budget modifications, as well as annual revenue and expenditure projections and assisting with development efforts to support academic services.

The Vice President is part of a larger JVS team, all of whom are supporting the education, training, and employment needs of clients and employers. The Vice President serves as an active member of senior leadership team, thereby equitably contributing to agency performance goals and working to support the overall mission and philosophy of JVS and its programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Agency Leadership

  • Execute agency strategic plan for Academic Services
  • Develop long-range plans and strategies to ensure the agency’s continued success in fulfilling its mission and achieving short- and long-term goals for Academic Services
  • Ensure all contract requirements are met
  • Generate strategy and solutions in response to unforeseen and planned changes, setbacks, and challenges
  • Expand scope and impact of program services, and develop new services based on partner organizations’ and client feedback
  • Ensure JVS Academic Services are accessible, customer-centered, and providing options
  • Communicate and provide program updates, reports, and metrics
  • Increase internal and external visibility of Academic Services programs
  • Hire, train, supervise, develop, and set performance expectations for Academic Services leadership team
  • Provide oversight and leadership of Academic Services
  • Set an example and inspire staff, colleagues, and other members of leadership to excel in their roles
  • Provide management support to other areas when needed

Build Relationships, Collaboration, and Teamwork

  • Ensure programmatic alignment across JVS programs
  • Manage agency level external relationships relevant to Academic Services (BPS, DESE, colleges. philanthropy, state, federal)
  • Support and promote the mission and philosophy of JVS both internally and outside the agency
  • Establish relationships with key stakeholders (clients/students, employers, partner organizations, funders) and work collaboratively in a structured and on-going manner
  • Work collaboratively with and encourage collaboration between JVS departments and divisions to ensure agency performance goals are met
  • Represent JVS at stakeholder and other professional events
  • Collaborate with Development staff on grant proposal activities
  • Engage with the JVS Board of Directors including regular Board meetings, sub-committee(s) and Board member requests
  • Provide leadership and support to all JVS departments when needed

Administration/Communication

  • Manage and oversee full, timely contract implementation including staffing, systems design, and development
  • Ensure JVS programs operate in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Manage budget of nearly $3 million. Monitor and control budgetary expenses and revenue performance.
  • Manage contract reporting, ensuring that reports are accurate and submitted in a timely fashion
  • Oversee grant application and management. Partner with Chief Development Officer to identify and cultivate funders to ensure current and future philanthropic support for Academic Services programs.
  • Oversee customer satisfaction surveying and evaluation system; serve as a liaison with clients, including hearing and resolving complaints or grievances
  • Analyze and report program progress, successes, and challenges to JVS leadership, funders, evaluators, and other stakeholders
  • Implement agency contracts including oversight, reporting and invoicing
  • Prepare and monitor program work plans, in support of JVS and contractual obligations
  • Perform other duties as requested

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Seven years of program management and supervisory experience, with extensive experience in nontraditional/alternative education
  • Proven program development
  • Experience leading and managing high-performing teams
  • Proven financial management skills
  • Knowledge of DESE ACLS contracting preferred
  • Presentation and facilitation skills
  • Experience in grant and proposal writing and grant management
  • Experience in preparation of budgets, forecasting expenses

I am happy to announce that Harvard Extension School will again offer the Nonprofit Human Resource Management course in the Spring 2021 semester.  The course introduces participants to the best practices, policies, and theories related to nonprofit human resource management. Whether you are now or plan to be an HR practitioner or a leader, manager or board member for a nonprofit organization, museum, school, or foundation, this course prepares you with the knowledge and skills needed to manage human capital in a nonprofit setting. This is also a great learning opportunity for those interested in making a career transition into the nonprofit sector.

Class meetings will be held each Tuesday from 5:10 p.m. – 7:10 p.m. ET from January 26, 2021 – May 11, 2021.  This is a live, web-based course and will include a combination of class lectures, discussions, activities, and several nonprofit executives as our guest speakers.  I originally created and taught this course in the Fall 2019 semester, for which I received a Dean’s Commendation for Excellence in Teaching.

How to Support Restaurants as Temperatures Begin to Dip

Grab a Blanket and Show Restaurants Our Love!

I am frightened for the future of our restaurants and the impact that losing them will have on the vibrancy of our communities.

Just over a week ago, some friends and I were having dinner in our home city of Boston, MA at Orfano, which is owned by our friend Tiffani Faison. Two of us had walked about a mile to get there, walking through the neighborhoods of Back Bay, Kenmore and Fenway. Several restaurants were permanently closed, some already closed for the night at 5:45 p.m., and those that were open were not overly crowded.

We started talking about the need to support our local restaurants. They give us a place to celebrate, to feel supported in harHow to Support Restaurants as Temperatures Begin to Dipd times, to meet up with loved ones, to unwind after a tough day, and to be nourished, physically and sometimes even psychologically.

Restaurants are a pivotal part of our communities and have been hit especially hard by the pandemic. Add the arrival of fall and the impending winter (which in Boston can be brutal) and restaurants are in dire need of patrons who can embrace a creative approach.

In Norwegian culture, they embrace winter in a big way, and have a saying that “there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”. They suggest enjoying outdoor life in the “vinter” months with layers, a focus on woolen materials, and topping it off with a wind-resistant layer. Essentially, pretend you’re heading off to your favorite ski slope. Then pretend it’s apres ski time outdoors and enjoy a meal.

My friends and I decided that evening to establish the Boston Blanket Brigade to mobilize fellow Bostonians to help save our restaurants. Our mission is to blanket restaurants in love and support with flash mob dining. Each week, we will announce a restaurant that we are visiting, sitting outside with our friends, with our blankets to stay warm while helping to fill tables. Join us, or create your own brigade elsewhere, any day of the week in any city or town, at the restaurant of your choice.

We had our kickoff event this past Sunday, returning to Orfano since it was where this idea was generated, and I am thrilled to say that was a terrific success.

Not in Boston? There are several different ways to get involved:

  • Follow Boston Blanket Brigade on Instagram at @bostonblanketbrigade
  • Host a DIY Blanket Brigade at your own favorite restaurant, at a time or day of the week of your choice, no matter what city or town you are in. Be sure to take a photo and tag us. It will be fun to see how far the brigade reaches!
  • Make a donation to support the effort to save independent restaurants. The Independent Restaurant Coalition is working tirelessly to save them.
  • Make a donation to support restaurant industry workers. The Emeril Lagasse Foundation Hospitality Industry Relief Fund was created to support industry workers who are experiencing hardship from the COVID-19 crisis and will provide emergency relief grants based on need to workers who have lost employment due to the shutdown for the pandemic.

Think of it this way: when a vaccine comes out and we are able to congregate again, where will you want to meet up with your friends and family? Chance are, many of you said a restaurant. Let us blanket them in our support now to ensure that they are there when we return en masse.

The 8th Annual Raise the Bar HIRE! Conference

I am excited to be presenting as part of a team at the 8th Annual Raise the Bar HIRE! Conference in October. This is the annual conference of Work Without Limits. Work Without Limits is a nonprofit network of employers, educational institutions, employment service providers, state and federal agencies, individuals with disabilities and their family members. Through collaboration and partnership, their goal is to increase the employment of people with disabilities until it is equal to those without disabilities.

The other presenters for this session includes Sean Driscoll of BB Squared Consulting, Lisa Drennan of Merge Consulting, and Meghan Steinberg of Steinberg HR.  We will join forces for The Challenge for Accessibility and Inclusion Amidst a Landscape of Pandemic Forces and Racial Unrest: Four Professionals: Four Perspectives

The realization that COVID-19 brought to our landscapes, combined with the nation’s unrest around race and racial inequities, have spotlighted the gaps and continued challenges for vulnerable communities. One of the earliest spotlights streamed onto the challenges around access and inclusion in the reactive necessity of remote connectivity during isolation. Challenges around access and inclusion are certainly not new to the Disability community, but have been elevated more during this time; new awareness around how and/or if we are creating accessible and inclusive enough spaces for the Disability diverse community and all diverse identities is evolving. As four peer small business consultancies, we found ourselves talking about these themes as we brainstormed and began working and existing in the remote landscapes which had escalated around us. Like everyone else, we’d had no time to prepare, but are living the experience in real time as we move forward. We’ve begun learning as we go, and we wanted to create a space to share our perspectives around this important theme. But we also want to elicit experiential observations, feelings AND contribution from all and any stakeholders who want to listen, talk and share.
