Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serving the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley affiliate will have responsibilities in budgeting, cost analysis, cost management and revenue forecasting. This strategic role requires oversight of staff, collaborating well with peers and colleagues within the organization, and requires a strong level of strategic decision-making ability. The winning candidate should demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence and high standards of execution along with contemporary approaches to leading teams that are adept at handling controversy and conflict. Candidates should also prove effectiveness in remaining calm under pressure internally, while demonstrating diplomatic interface with members of the public when challenged by those who may disagree with the mission, vision, and values of Planned Parenthood.

The candidate should have a grasp of the changing healthcare environment, sensitivity to the interface of political impacts on the business, scalable systems deployment when necessary, billing and payroll, compliance, labor laws, retirement plan administration, and the integration and growth of new services, including mental health services. Candidates should prove effectiveness working in partnership with a well-coordinated leadership team to support emerging business strategies. Previous experience should include real estate expansions, working with purchasing, leasing, and property management in general, as well as handling organizational growth and the financial impacts of expanding services, staff, and premises.

Planned Parenthood Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley is seeking an experienced, full time financial executive with a strong background in healthcare.

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business or equivalent experience
    • Master’s degree preferred
    • CPA certification strongly preferred
    • Minimum 10-years’ experience managing financial systems in health care and/or non-profit settings
    • 5 – 7 years demonstrated leadership at the senior management level
    • Demonstrated experience as a business partner understanding the changing healthcare environment and working in partnership to support emerging business strategies
    • Experience in budgeting, cost analysis, cost management and revenue forecasting
    • Experience supervising staff with respect and diplomacy, while acting as part of a strategic decision-making team
    • Experience preparing, reviewing, understanding, analyzing and executing details of contracts
    • Demonstrated success managing revenue, effectively planning, and maintaining effective systems of internal control
    • Experience in 3rd party reimbursement mechanisms
    • Proficiency with electronic practice management and electronic health records preferred, including ability to run reports and extract data from analysis
    • Strong software proficiency in MS Excel, Outlook and financial database software required

Announcing LIFT’s New Chief Advancement Officer!

Pillar Search & HR Consulting is excited to announce that Gabe Scheck will be joining LIFT as Chief Advancement Officer (CAO).  In this capacity, Gabe will lead the development and communications teams to build philanthropic support for LIFT. As a key member of the executive team, Gabe will also be instrumental in contributing to strategy, management, and culture to move LIFT’s work forward.  Gabe has extensive experience fostering new multi-year, multi-million-dollar philanthropic partnerships (including the largest gift Salesforce has ever given to an non-profit organization at $2M), securing federal grant awards, and launching new business sites in urban and rural areas.

Gabe joins LIFT from New Leaders, where he served as Chief Development Officer (CDO).  In that role, he cultivated champions for New Leaders’ mission and expanded the organization’s impact by overseeing development, marketing, and communications. Gabe managed a team of regional and national fundraising professionals to raise more than $15M annually, collaborated closely with colleagues to ensure funding supported key priorities, and shaped organizational strategy as a member of New Leaders’ executive team. Before joining New Leaders, Gabe served in a variety of roles at Teach For America-New York. During his tenure, he doubled the incoming Teach For America corps from 200 to 400 members, negotiated a large district contract with increased general operating support, and launched an early childhood education program line. He received his B.A. in Political Science from Brown University, a master’s in teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University and was a Coro Fellow in Public Affairs. A resident of Brooklyn, NY, Gabe is the proud father of two young boys, Emory (7) and Andy (2).

Pillar Search & HR Consulting is excited to announce that Frances Lee will be joining the National Office of Raising A Reader as Development Director.  In this capacity, Frances will be responsible for developing and leading Raising A Reader’s annual contributed revenue plan. Reporting to the President and CEO, she will lead a three-year growth fund campaign to support the organization’s new strategic plan and build relationships with institutional and major donors.

Frances joins Raising A Reader from Girls on the Run of the Bay Area, where she served as Development & Communications Manager.  In that role, Frances was responsible for events, marketing and fundraising campaigns to ensure the continued growth of the organization and creating meaningful partnerships with Bay Area companies and community members to further the mission of empowering healthy, confident girls. Before joining Girls on the Run, Frances served in a variety of roles including as a consultant with the San Francisco Bach Choir, Senior Manager, Field Development with Autism Speaks, and Community Engagement Representative with Be The Match, which is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program. In addition, Frances is currently on the Board of Directors at Little Opera, where she serves as Development Chair, and has done event and fundraising consulting with San Francisco Marathon, A Runner’s Mind Productions, and OneCause.

Position Summary

The Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Development provides leadership in developing and executing human resources strategy and programs in support of the business plan and strategic direction of the organization. This expansive role provides in-depth leadership of the HR and OD functions; ensures the success of the organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion work; and oversees the agency’s security, legal, and compliance functions. OD and DE&I are new functions, created out of the need to support PPPSGV with growth and large-scale change and to actualize their Strategic Plan initiative to Advance a Culture of Reproductive Justice and Gender Equity.

The position reports to the COO, is a member of the Leadership Team, and works closely with the CEO on key matters related to HR, Compliance, and DE&I. Staffing and resources under the oversight of the VP include three FTE’s dedicated to HR, OD, and DE&I; an outsourced talent acquisition function; the Compliance and Security Manager; and the General Counsel/Compliance Officer (a shared role between three affiliates). PPPSGV is currently restructuring and building the HR team, and this work will continue under the direction of the VP of HR and OD. Temporary staff and consulting resources are in place to support departmental staff transitions and the building of the HR, OD, and DE&I functions.

Key responsibilities for the VP of HR and OD include:

  • Ensure PPPSGV’s training and development programs equip staff to meet the technical demands of their jobs, create career development pathways, drive a culture of Excellence in Leadership, and support a cohort of continuously learning leaders.
  • Oversee employee relations practices that balance manager support and employee advocacy, advising managers in resolving and anticipating complex issues and questions in a fair and equitable manner compliant with PPPSGV values, legal regulations, and general business practices.
  • Oversee the performance management program, and ensure managers have appropriate guidance on documentation, coaching, and performance improvement plans.
  • Cultivate and lead a talented, service-driven, and resourceful HR team that models leadership at all levels and sets the tone for organizational values and culture.
  • Advance a culture of inclusion, where diversity is valued, great ideas are recognized, and the fair and respectful treatment of all persons is a core value.
  • Identify when to access, and serve as the HR point of contact for, legal counsel and the Compliance Office as related to employment or HR-related compliance issues.
  • Carry out the investigation of claims of discrimination or harassment.
  • Stay abreast of and ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies and State and Federal law related to HR personnel policies, procedures, record keeping, and activities; ensure managers are informed of and competent in all relevant HR compliance requirements.
  • Ensure employee information, records, and documentation are accurate, complete, and up to date, and that storage systems are user friendly, efficient, and protective of sensitive and confidential information.
  • Implement and adhere to the HR department budget and work plan; ensure organizational staffing and benefits budgets align with established staffing models and the compensation and benefits strategies.
  • Champion optimization, measurement, and efficiency, and ensure HR operations and programs are performance driven, data informed, and structured to meet strategic objectives within established budgets and timeframes.
  • Oversee the agency’s Administrative Services function, including the following:
    • The Safety and Security program, managed by the Compliance and Security Manager.
    • The Risk and Quality Management program, under the responsibility of the Compliance Officer and managed by the Compliance and Security Manager.
    • Legal services, carried out by the General Counsel and various contracted service providers.

Required Experience & Qualifications

Experience & Education

    • 8+ years of work experience in all aspects of Human Resources and Organizational Development as well as general Business Management
    • 5+ years of experience in leading and developing HR professionals
    • Experience in healthcare strongly preferred
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required. Master’s degree with emphasis on Human Resources Management, Organizational Development, or Business preferred.
    • SHRM-CP/PHR certification a plus.
    • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience with HR Generalist, Talent Acquisition/Planning, Learning and Development, Employee Relations, Organizational Development, Change Management, and Diversity & Inclusion functions
    • Extensive knowledge of employment and labor law required
    • Experience overseeing risk management, legal, and/or security functions a plus

Announcing Harvard Extension School’s First-Ever Nonprofit Human Resource Management Course

I am excited to announce that I am creating and will be teaching Harvard Extension School‘s first-ever Nonprofit Human Resource Management course this fall.  This course will provide an introduction to the practices, policies, and theories related to nonprofit human resource management. Designed for those who are now or will be an HR practitioner or executive for a nonprofit organization, museum, school, or foundation, this course will prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed to manage human capital in a nonprofit setting.

Classes begin on Monday, September 9th.  This is a live, web-based course running through mid-December, and will include several nonprofit executive guest speakers.  Registration opens on Monday, July 29th.  Learn more here!
